Plastic Housing Laser Marking

Discover the permanent marking reactions on industrial plastic parts and traceability benefits in quality control processes achieved with the Laserator MarkBOX-TC Fiber Laser.

Speed, precision, and durability are the three most critical elements in modern production lines. Marking your brand logo, CE mark, or serial number onto a manufactured part is not merely a design choice—it is a mandatory industrial standard.

In this week's application spotlight, we take a detailed look at our marking study performed on an industrial component featuring both light- and dark-colored plastic materials using our Laserator MarkBOX-TC 20W Fiber Laser Machine.

Material

Applying a laser to plastic surfaces requires a much more delicate chemical and thermal process than working with metal. Thanks to its concentrated beam generated at a 1064 nm wavelength, the Laserator MarkBOX-TC 20W delivers exceptional control over plastic polymers.

"Carbonization" (Darkening) on Light-Colored Plastic

Here, the 20W fiber laser beam breaks polymer bonds on the plastic surface, creating localized heating. This process causes carbon atoms within the material to migrate to the surface and oxidize (carbonization). As a result, crisp, dark gray/black lettering with high contrast is achieved purely from the nature of the material itself, without engraving or gouging the plastic surface.

"Foaming" (Lightening) on Dark-Colored Plastic

When the laser beam impacts black plastic, it melts the surface at a microscopic level, causing trapped gas bubbles to form (foaming). Because these micro-bubbles reflect light differently, bright white/light-colored markings with exceptionally high readability (e.g., ABCDEFGH... serial numbers) emerge against the black substrate.

Why 20W?

In plastic applications, excessively high power (such as 50W-100W) can scorch and melt the plastic, leading to thermal damage. A 20W fiber laser provides the ideal and stable energy required to trigger the micron-level color change reaction without compromising the integrity of the plastic surface.

Quality Control

Eliminating defects in a production facility and tracking products in the field is the primary responsibility of the Quality Control (QC) department. The Laserator MarkBOX-TC serves as an indispensable asset for quality assurance workflows.

In Conclusion

The Laserator MarkBOX-TC 20W Fiber Laser Machine does not simply create an aesthetic look on your plastic parts; it provides them with industrial identity, security, and permanence. Eliminating consumable costs (ink, labels, etc.) entirely, this technology preserves the material structure while digitizing your quality control operations.

Permanence (Durability)

Permanence (Durability)

Inkjet printouts and adhesive labels fade, rub off, or peel over time due to friction, oils, chemical solvents, or UV exposure. The "MarkBOX-TC" text and the "CE" symbol become an integral, physical part of the plastic. Even if the part operates in a harsh industrial environment for 10 years, these markings remain as legible as day one.

100% Traceability

100% Traceability

Note the alphanumeric codes (ABCDEFGH.P.K 123477) marked on the lower black section of the part. Our laser marking machine's software can automatically apply serialized numbers, batch numbers, barcodes, or 2D DataMatrix/QR codes to each individual piece. In the event of a field failure, this code enables full traceability in seconds, identifying which shift produced the part and which raw material batch was used.

Standards (CE and Regulations)

Standards (CE and Regulations)

For products to enter international markets, compliance logos such as CE and RoHS must be clearly and indelibly marked to rigorous standards. A CE mark applied via an adhesive label fails most regulatory audits. Logos marked with the Laserator MarkBOX-TC feature sub-millimeter precision, ensuring flawless compliance during quality inspections.
